Richard Turner

Patent Attorney, Partner

Richard has over 30 years’ continuous experience in the patent profession, firstly in private practice, then in the patent department of Philips Electronics and most recently running his own practice, which was merged with Stevens, Hewlett and Perkins in 2021. Richard works primarily in the fields of electronics and mechanical engineering, especially in software and systems, packaging, display, lighting, caravan, machinery and security technologies. Richard also handles a significant amount of design work, particularly UK registered and unregistered design rights. Richard is also SH&P’s lead in patent and design litigation and has lengthy and varied experience in both High Court and IPEC litigation.

Richard acts for clients of all sizes, including private inventors, small and medium sized companies and large multinationals, helping to protect their intellectual property in the United Kingdom and around the world. Richard prepares and files a large number of United Kingdom and European patent applications each year and has a very strong track record in prosecuting those applications through to grant. Richard also regularly appears in hearings before the European Patent Office and has many years’ experience in opposition and appeal proceedings at the EPO. Richard is an advisor in residence at SetSquared Bristol.

Richard enjoys spending his free time with his wife and two sporty sons. Richard regularly plays football and golf and is a keen theatre goer. Time permitting, Richard also enjoys playing board games and reading books on British history.
